A Candle Loses Nothing By Lighting Another Candle

I’m a firm believer that you get what you give (some people call it Karma). The energy you pour out is the same energy you’re going to get back in a boomerang effect. So if you’re the type of person that wants big things, then you need to evaluate the energy you’re sending out. One of the complaints I hear the most with people in hip hop, poetry, and small business circles is that people don’t support the local community. What I DO agree with is that it’s hard to create something big when you’re the only one with the passion for the vision (it’s hard but not impossible), but I DON’T believe that there is no support. (Related: Impossible is a Lie)

As an artist (singer, rapper, poet, event host, writer, entrepreneur, whatever) you need to look at what you’re doing as a business (because you do want to sell albums and tickets and merchandise right? Just making sure), and the “support” you’re looking for as your customers. If you want them to buy into what you’re doing you have to “sell” the value in whatever movement you want moving. They need to know what’s in it for them.

Let’s face it, without the support, you’ll be a lone candle trying to find your way in the dark, and you won't be able to sustain for long... But a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. What does that mean? If you want to receive positive energy and support you have to give it out first. If someone else is throwing an event in your community, make an effort to go out and support, exchange business cards (because by now you’re looking at yourself as a business right? Just making sure), invest in relationships. Why wouldn’t you want to do business with someone you like? But don’t stop there. When it’s time for your event, don’t make it about yourself. That would defeat the purpose. Let somebody else have an opportunity to shine. A bunch of candles can light the dark much easier than one candle by itself. Have you ever seen a candle lose anything by lighting another candle?
