3 Ways To Overcome Rejection

Have you ever felt like you were looked over for something that you deserved? Maybe it was the promotion at your job. Maybe it was that person you were crushing on that kept you in the dreaded friend zone. Maybe you went on American Idol and Simon said you were awful. The point is that at some point we all have to deal with rejection.

The story usually plays out pretty similarly across the board: You bust ass working hard to show that you’re ready for the next level of [insert status here] only for the decision maker to go with another option. Ouch! Good news is, now the ball is in your hands. So, do you go in the corner and lick your wounds or do you come back swinging? Note: I do NOT recommend LITERALLY throwing punches at anybody because you got rejected. And if you do, don’t say I told you to do it! Anyway, here’s a few ways to overcome rejection and make them regret rejecting you in the first place.

1.) Become Invaluable

What I mean here is become so much of an asset to your employer/crush/judge that there is no denying your value. How? Study, learn, and apply. This isn’t so that they’ll realize your worth. This is so YOU realize your worth. Then maybe you won’t be afraid to branch out and do what really makes you happy. Maybe that means starting your own business. Maybe it means finding someone who doesn’t keep you on a string, just in case their relationship doesn’t work out. A wise man once said “You either build your dreams, or someone will hire you to help build theirs.” Which brings me to my next point...

2.) Do What Makes You Happy

Let me splice two proverbs together with “If you don’t work, you don’t eat,” and “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No matter what you’ll still have to work, grind, and hustle, but the grind is more enjoyable when it’s building something you love. I mean, if these guys can make a living by talking about video games on camera, then there has to be a way for you to make money from what you love, right? Conversely, you could spend the rest of your life building someone else’s dreams for less pay. Ultimately, your choices should be based on what makes you feel happy, valued, and fulfilled. Bringing me to...

3.) Be What You Want To Attract

What you are is what you attract. Face it, the reason you were attracted to the job in the first place was because you saw the value in the company (They make a lot of money, are well known, and you figured you could get a nice paycheck from them). You saw value in your crush (a cute piece of arm candy that could make you feel better about yourself if that person was with you). You saw value in going on American Idol (Everybody knows about American Idol and if you could go far enough in the competition, people would know about you too). Are you seeing the pattern? You could have this same effect by adjusting your thought process (Related: What I Learned From Miss America 2013). Instead of taking value from someone/something, add value to those around you. How? Refer back to Point #1. Rinse, lather, repeat. What do you think? What have you done to overcome rejection in the past and how did it work out? Let me know in the comments below!
